Natural Treatments To Improve Bone Density

Osteoporosis is the term used to describe brittle and weak bones. As bones become thin and weak, we call this decreasing bone density.

Osteoporosis is usually a consequence of advancing age, but it can also be a consequence of menopause. Estrogen protects the bones by keeping calcium in the bones and thereby maintaining bone density. During and after menopause, estrogen levels are reduced, therefore the protection estrogen would give to bones is reduced and bone density decreases at a more rapid rate.

Natural treatments to slow down the loss of bone are a useful treatment to help prevent and treat osteoporosis. The following minerals and vitamins are used to reduce the loss of bone density:

  • Calcium
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium
  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Manganese

The best forms of calcium in supplement form is calcium citrate, calcium phosphate and calcium hydroxyapatite as the body is able to absorb more calcium from calcium citrate as opposed to other forms of calcium. Calcium carbonate is the most common form of calcium supplements, however less calcium is absorbed from the carbonate form. Bones are primarily made up of calcium and providing the body with more calcium can help keep them strong.

Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is used to assist in the absorption of calcium.

Magnesium is necessary for strong bones and teeth.

Zinc, Copper and Manganese is essential for skeletal development and repair.
