Phytoestrogens are naturally occurring compounds that are similar to female hormones. They can be used to relieve menopause symptoms such as hot flashes in some women. Phytoestrogens should not be confused with hormone replacement therapy. Although phytoestrogens can alleviate menopause symptoms in some women, they do not have the added benefit of preventing bone loss in postmenopausal women.
